That garage sale you can't resist, don't stop if you truly don't have a need. That present Aunt Martha gave you five years ago that you never liked, give it away. If you hang on to things because you feel bad, don't. If that day comes, you're going to want to get all new clothes anyway! If you want to paint this or fix up that someday and it's not happening, get rid of it. Don't hang on to it - that includes those clothes that "someday" you'll fit into again. Or, just get it someday when that day has come. Give it to a friend to borrow who needs it now, and give it back when your "someday" has arrived. Storing it now for someday isn't always the best choice and just causes more clutter. The "someday I may need it" item needs to go. If you have two of something, you likely have too many! Unless you've got twins, two of something means it's time to toss it!

Label it, color code it, or do whatever you need to remember where it belongs. Or, a family member uses something but doesn't know where it "belongs". We often find we want to declutter but when you go to put back the stuff you actually use, you have no place for it.

Not a full on, pull everything out, all over the floor purge every week - but I look at stuff around me weekly to check and make sure I'm actually using it.

The TV collection is in another box, but I haven’t made those dividers yet.To be good at organizing, you have to be good at purging - and doing it a LOT. All the labels are in Futura and I think? it looks very nice.Īgain, this was like five bags of jewel cases. I used Avery 5162 labels, cut down to squares, to make letters to put on them. I bought this chipboard and cut it (using my industrial paper cutter and huge muscles) into pieces 5.5″ wide and 9″ tall. I couldn’t find any that fit, so I made some myself. I use Avery size 5167 labels (teeny tiny) and ran a mail merge on the list of titles we had (Tom typed it up after we got everything alphabetized).ħ. OPTIONAL STEPS if you have the librarian bug:Ħ. You can also use pretty wicker baskets or something if you’re a Pinterest person. There are shallower ones if you want to put them in a TV console. We used these, and they’re nice, but make sure it will fit in whatever cabinet you want to put these in. Can you believe this has been in your house for so long?Ĥ.

Laugh at how some of these cases have coupons in them for like, tickets to see a Batman movie in 2005. Show seasons one through three for the entire 12 years we’ve lived together? Get rid of anything you don’t want anymore (still-shrinkwrapped well-meaning present from Christmas 2009? GET OUT OF HERE!).ģa. Did you know Tom and I have had two copies of Mr. Look how much less room the notorious shelf-hog Lord of the Rings trilogy takes up:ģ. Get rid of any duplicates. The cover isn’t super important, it just looks nice. You can either cut something off of it to use as a cover or leave it be. Some DVD cases are built different and don’t have a cover you can slide out. This helps TV show collections take up less space. I also found that you can slide two disc-holder pieces into one plastic sleeve, fitting four discs in one sleeve. Each sleeve holds two discs, so for movies that have a special features disc, it can stay together. Put the disc(s) in there, slide the paper cover out, fold it in half, and put that in there too. Buy sleeves: These are the sleeves we bought.Ģ. This is a post about how we did it and what things to buy if you want to do it, too.ġ. Tom and I recently organized our DVD (and blu-ray, but we can all agree to say “DVD” to mean “disc with media on it,” right?) collection, including throwing out all the jewel cases so it takes up less room.
